About Me

Hi, I’m Alex.

I build communities, started one of the longest running coworking communities in the world, write a crapload of words every day, tweet a little too much, coach people to be the best version of themselves possible, can't stop learning new things, and do my very best not to take myself too seriously.

I have one goal: to fill the world with truly excellent collaborators so we can all work together, better.

Because let's be honest...most of us aren't very good at it.

About Alex

Hi, I’m Alex.

Alex Hillman

This is where I share my no-nonsense flavor of thinking about collaboration, coworking, culture, community, & the future of work on this blog. You can follow me on Twitter, I’m @alexknowshtml.

I believe in these 5 truths:

  • Learning is a part of everyday life.
  • True collaborations start with the foundation of a relationship, not a transaction.
  • Either the world happens to you, or you happen to the world. You get to choose which.
  • Success, happiness, and love are things that are not achieved but are experienced, and are best experienced with others.
  • Do, or do not. There is no try. #JFDI

This list is a work in progress and will be updated. Like anything authentic, it is incomplete and awaiting new contributions.

I’m the co-founder of Philadelphia’s Indy Hall, one of the world’s most respected coworking communities. With over 6 consecutive years of vibrant growth and hundreds of active members, it has become a mainstay in the Philadelphia creative, technology, and entrepreneurship scene.

I’m also the creator and lead instructor of the Community Builder Masterclass, an intensive bootcamp-style course that teaches community leaders, managers, and corporations how to build a robust and powerful culture that scales for anything from a neighborhood association to a coworking space to a Fortune 50 business.

Some kind words from other people

“Alex Hillman and the team at Indy Hall are true leaders within Philadelphia’s entrepreneurial community, helping establish this city as an emerging hub for innovators, founders and creators. If you’re looking to build a community, these are the folks to learn from.”
-Michael Nutter
Mayor of Philadelphia

“Alex is one of the primary reasons that the coworking community exists and has grown into a thriving, global phenomenon. His contagious enthusiasm has infused others with the courage and drive to start their own spaces, and his leadership and stewardship at IndyHall serves as the model for what a successful community-centric coworking space looks like.”
– Chris Messina
co-founder of the coworking movement
& creator of the #hashtag
