Around a year ago, I acted in response to this problem:
My solution was simple: you, me, and a few dozen other aspiring community builders would a few hours together going over coworking core values, principles of community building, how to market a community, a peek into problem solving in a community, how a business model can be formed from a community…all great, valuable stuff. Based on the survey feedback, everybody walked away learning something.
I’m now taking this further– going beyond showing why community is necessary and diving deep into how to build great communities.
To build on what I’d started, with the help of some smart supporters and friends, we’ve created something new that’s ACTIONABLE & COLLABORATIVE.
Sneak peek at our hit list of changes:
- We overhauled the format. There’s something funny about teaching “community building”, which is a deeply collaborative process, as a lecture. We’ve flipped that on its head and created an entire new way of delivering the Masterclass.
- We increased the emphasis on discussion. Q&A was really where I got to shine, but it was the vast minority of the Seminar. Now ALL of the time we spend together is discussion, coaching, sharing, Q&A.
- We made it about you. While talking about myself and my experiences with Indy Hall makes for an informative case study, I’m not you. You’re not me. I even opened up the course and said “don’t cargo cult” and then spent the next several hours giving you tons of cargo cult-able stories. Totally my mistake. The new course helps YOU be a better version of YOU.
I stopped giving the seminars after February so I could take the time to overhaul the program to help community builders like you to kick more ass.
What’s a Masterclass?
First, it’s interactive. You can’t just sit in gym to get stronger or put on running shoes and get faster. You have to do the work.
And unlike the seminars, your interaction with me and the other students takes the stage in the Masterclass.
Replacing the a “live” lecture is all of material is written ahead of time so you can read and work at your own pace (following the general calendar of the course). Each of the 4 lessons is around 25 pages of new material + 2 or 3 workbook exercises. You’ll need a few hours every week to really be thorough and complete the reading and the homework.
The masterclass then flips a “traditional” classroom around. By making the parts that are normally lecture “on your own time”, the focus of our interaction is sharing the results, discussing problems and concerns, and as a class, working together to make sure that you’re not only readying the lessons and doing the homework but you’re APPLYING yourself. We have a private email list for discussion, and multiple times a week we host live Office Hours in a chat room. All of this time is for you to practice, and actually improve, the thing that you’re enrolled to get better at: community building.
Second, it’s a system for producing the results you want. Again, you can’t just do the exercises you like to get a full body workout. You need to do the right moves, the right weights, the right order.
The Community Builders Masterclass doesn’t teach you what the results are – that’s what my seminars used to do and that wasn’t as effective as it could have been.
Learn To Think Different
The Masterclass instead teaches you how to get the results for yourself. Not just while you’re enrolled, but every time. The course is designed to be a bit like a boot camp: it won’t just make you stronger, it changes the way you look at community building. And I’m not just hopin’ and dreamin’. The currently enrolled attendees are saying it themselves, even before the end of lesson 2.
“I too, struggled a bit with this one. We are always so trained to focus on the what, that they why becomes left behind. This lesson dramatically highlighted the fact that we need to be more engaged with our community as to what THEIR real needs are, not the perceived needs that we cast upon them. In the past, we’ve lived a bit in the “if you build it, they will come” philosophy and am learning now the error in our ways.”
And this “complete turnaround” kind of thinking happened early in the course, before we focus on actions that can be taken with this new kind of thinking.
The October session of the Masterclass starts on Monday, October 8th and runs for the following four consecutive weeks.
The ticket price is now discounted to $950 until this Friday, September 21st before it goes up to $1250.
Oh, and there’s a “warm up” intro lesson that’s available for free.
You want to succeed. I want you to succeed.
I’ll ask you to show that you’ve done the homework and followed advice in order to get the refund. But if you really feel like I’m not helping you, you’ll get all of your money back.
Regardless of what stage of community building you’re in, from brand new just getting started to existing, mature communities, this course works.
The bad news, of course, is that the seats are limited.
I hope to see you in class.
