Last night, I was watching/listening to the recent press event where Jeff Bezos, founder & CEO of Amazon.com, introduced the new Kindle line.
To be honest, he’s not Steve Jobs when it comes to product keynotes, but it was clear to me from less than 5 minutes in that one of the keys to Amazon’s success now and in the future is the fact that they’re extremely adept at empathizing with their customers.
Around the 1 hour 5 minutes mark, Bezos introduces The Amazon Doctrine:
Above all else, align with the customers.
Win when they win.
Win ONLY when they win.
The result is an ALIGNMENT of Amazon Customers’ interests, and Amazon itself. In the case of the Kindle, they’ve built devices so that Amazon makes money when people USE the Kindle instead of when people BUY a Kindle. To paraphrase Bezos, “If a customer buys a Kindle and puts it in a drawer, never to use it again, we don’t DESERVE to make money.” This will influence their decision making, from pricing & support to features & services.
I realized that this kind of alignment was a valuable skill for masterful community building & management practices, and of course…updated my Spark File.
