Like A Column

I’ve been writing on this blog since December 2006, and started with a very typical “I’m going to start blogging again” post.

Interestingly, just a few weeks later, I wrote (poorly, you might notice) about pseudo/internet-celebrities Kevin Rose & Alex Albrecht, who some nerds will recognize of their Diggnation fame. Re-reading 6 year ago me admiring these two, what I didn’t realize was that they weren’t doing anything different, only that they’d built an audience.

Fame, of course, is extremely relative.

I’m still not sure what I wanted then. I’m not sure that what I have now is what I wanted then.

Flash-forward 6 years, and at the risk of some ego-centrism, I might be able to say that I’ve accomplished a fraction of what I sheepishly aspired to in 2006. I started writing here for me – and much of the time, I still do. Most of the things I write here are to get them out of my head, but at the same time knowing that there’s people reading. Especially as my ideas around coworking have evolved and matured, I’ve written more and more about that. I’m pretty proud of this blog becoming a public archive of those ideas, and don’t expect to stop writing here though I would like to write more “personal” things again. I don’t know that I’ve done this transition elegantly, or if anybody does.

Invitation

A few months ago, I was invited to join Svbtle, an experiment in writing & publishing by designer Dustin Curtis. Truth be told, I don’t know what the future of Svbtle holds but I’ve taken the opportunity on in my own head as having something a bit more like a column in a larger publication.

My personal blog has always been a bit of it’s own context, and for me Svbtle is a chance to write with a slightly larger context in mind. Interestingly, much of that context is “startups”, a topic that my discontent for might be one of my worst kept secrets. But Svbtle isn’t about startups, for me, though that’s a focus of many of the other authors. For me it’s the challenge of writing in a bigger context, sort of like a column within a newspaper.

It’s not about the readers. It’s not about the attention. It’s about writing in a new context. And about practice & getting better at writing, because that is important to me.

Some of my posts wouldn’t have made a lot of sense here on this blog. Others probably would have fit here, but I got to play with a slightly different voice on Svbtle.

DangerouslyAwesome and my Svbtle column aren’t written by two different people. If you’ve enjoyed this blog, you might enjoy what I have to say over there. Or not. 

I’m still just figuring things out, 6 years later.
